Radiographer (With MRI Experience)
Job Title: Senior Radiographer (MRI)
Department: Medical Imaging / Radiology
Reports To: Superintendent Radiographer / Imaging Manager
Job Purpose:
To perform a wide range of high-quality Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) examinations safely and efficiently, acting as an expert practitioner in this modality. The post-holder will be responsible for producing diagnostic images to aid in patient diagnosis and management, while providing supervision and support to junior staff and trainees. They will ensure the highest standards of patient care and safety, adhering to strict MRI safety protocols and operating within all relevant legislation and local policies.
Key Responsibilities:
Clinical Practice & Service Delivery:
- To perform a full range of routine and complex MRI scans (e.g., neurological, musculoskeletal, cardiac, abdominal, angiographic) on patients of all ages and clinical conditions.
- To utilize advanced scanning techniques and protocols to optimize image quality and diagnostic yield.
- To be responsible for patient safety within the MRI environment, including rigorous screening for contraindications (e.g., implants, devices, foreign bodies) and managing individuals with claustrophobia or anxiety.
- To administer contrast agents intravenously as per protocol, following strict aseptic techniques and monitoring patients for any adverse reactions.
- To operate and monitor all MRI equipment, reporting any faults and ensuring downtime is minimized.
Patient Care:
- To provide clear explanations and reassurance to patients and their relatives about the MRI procedure, ensuring informed consent is obtained.
- To assess and care for patients throughout their time in the department, ensuring their comfort, dignity, and safety are maintained at all times.
- To adapt techniques and communication styles for patients with specific needs, including pediatric, geriatric, and critically ill patients.
Technical & Safety Leadership:
- To act as the MRI Safety Officer or a key contributor to MRI safety, ensuring all staff and visitors comply with the 3-zone principle and safety guidelines.
- To be responsible for the quality assurance of the MRI scanner and associated equipment, participating in routine testing and calibration.
- To assist in the development and updating of MRI scanning protocols in conjunction with radiologists and the physics team.
Teamwork & Supervision:
- To supervise, mentor, and support junior radiographers, assistant practitioners, and student radiographers within the MRI unit.
- To participate in the training of other healthcare staff in MRI safety and procedures.
- To work collaboratively with radiologists, clinicians, and other members of the multi-disciplinary team.
Administration & Professional Development:
- To maintain accurate and detailed patient records on the Radiology Information System (RIS) and Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS).
- To manage own workload and prioritize patient lists effectively.
- To maintain and develop professional knowledge and skills through CPD, attending relevant courses and staying current with advancements in MRI technology.
Person Specification:
- Essential Qualifications:
- BSc (Hons) in Diagnostic Radiography or equivalent.
- Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
- Experience:
- Substantial post-qualification experience as a Radiographer.
- Proven and significant experience working in an MRI department.
- Skills & Knowledge:
- In-depth knowledge of MRI physics, safety, and screening procedures.
- Proficiency in a wide range of MRI scanning techniques and protocols.
- Competency in intravenous cannulation and contrast administration.
- Excellent communication and patient management skills.
- Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team in a high-pressure environment.
