Head Waiter (Captain)
Reports to: Restaurant Supervisor / Manager
Job Overview:
The Head Waiter, often known as the Captain, is a senior front-of-house role responsible for a specific section or "station" of the dining room. They are the primary point of contact for guests within their station, providing a elevated level of service. They lead the service team for their tables, mentor junior staff, and ensure guests have a memorable experience from start to finish.
Key Responsibilities:
- Guest Service: Provide exceptional, personalized service to guests. This includes greeting guests, presenting menus, explaining specials in detail, taking accurate orders, and ensuring all needs are anticipated and met.
- Order Management: Input orders into the POS system accurately and relay any specific guest requests or allergies to the kitchen clearly and promptly.
- Section Leadership: Oversee the service in their designated section, coordinating with Runners and Assistant Waiters to ensure timely and flawless food and beverage delivery.
- Wine Service: Possess strong wine knowledge and be capable of making recommendations and performing professional table-side wine service.
- Upselling: Expertly guide guests through the menu and wine list to enhance their experience and increase sales.
- Problem Resolution: Handle any guest concerns or complaints within their section promptly and professionally, escalating to a supervisor when necessary.
- Mentoring: Train and guide junior waiting staff on service standards, menu knowledge, and restaurant policies.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Significant experience (3+ years) as a Waiter in a high-volume, fine-dining, or upscale casual environment.
- Extensive and detailed knowledge of food, wine, beer, and spirits.
- Impeccable customer service and communication skills.
- Ability to lead a small team and work collaboratively.
- Proficiency with POS systems.
- Professional, polished appearance and demeanor.
