Permit Applicant - Civil
Job Summary:
The Permit Applicant - Civil is responsible for managing the Permit to Work (PTW) process for all civil-related activities on site. This role ensures that excavations, structural work, and other civil tasks are planned and executed with full consideration of underground hazards, overhead obstacles, and site-specific risks, thereby preventing incidents such as collapses, strikes on utilities, or falls.
Key Responsibilities:
- Permit Application: Identify the need for and apply for the correct permits (e.g., Excavation Permit, Confined Space Entry, Working at Height) for civil work scopes.
- Hazard Identification: Conduct thorough site assessments to identify hazards related to civil work, including underground utilities (using "Call Before You Dig" procedures), unstable ground, falling objects, and adjacent activities.
- Site Coordination: Coordinate with other departments and contractors to ensure the work area is properly barricaded, signed, and that control measures are in place (e.g., shoring for excavations, safety nets for working at height).
- Compliance Verification: Verify that all proposed work methods and equipment comply with the permit conditions and site safety standards.
- Communication: Serve as the primary point of contact for the civil work team regarding permit conditions, ensuring all crew members are briefed on the hazards and controls before starting work.
- Inspection & Monitoring: Continuously monitor the work area to ensure ongoing compliance with the permit and initiate a permit re-validation if conditions change.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related construction field.
- 3+ years of experience in civil construction or maintenance, with direct involvement in site safety and permit systems.
- Formal training in Permit to Work, Excavation Safety, Confined Space Entry, and Working at Height.
- Ability to read and interpret underground utility drawings and site plans.
- Strong observational and communication skills.
