Permit Applicant - Mechanical
Job Summary:
The Permit Applicant - Mechanical is a crucial role for ensuring the safe execution of mechanical maintenance, installation, and modification work. This individual is responsible for applying for and managing permits that cover tasks involving live equipment, pressure systems, hot work, and confined spaces, ensuring all energy sources are controlled and the work environment is safe.
Key Responsibilities:
- Permit Application: Prepare and submit detailed Permit to Work applications for mechanical tasks such as Hot Work (welding, grinding), work on pressurized systems, confined space entry, and complex machinery overhaul.
- Energy Isolation: Develop and verify the implementation of robust Lockout-Tagout (LOTO) procedures for all forms of hazardous energy (electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, chemical, gravitational).
- Job Safety Analysis: Lead or participate in JSA meetings to identify specific risks associated with the mechanical task (e.g., chemical release, unexpected movement, high pressure, temperature) and define necessary controls.
- Tool & Equipment Check: Ensure that all tools, lifting equipment, and PPE to be used are certified and in good working condition as per the permit requirements.
- Pre-Job Briefing: Conduct pre-job briefings with the mechanical crew to ensure everyone understands the work scope, associated hazards, isolation boundaries, and emergency procedures.
- Interface Management: Coordinate with operations personnel to ensure equipment is properly prepared and handed over for safe mechanical work. Ensure a smooth hand-back of the equipment after job completion.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Diploma or Associate Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related trade qualification (e.g., Millwright, Fitter).
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in mechanical maintenance within an industrial setting.
- Certified training in Permit to Work, Lockout-Tagout, Confined Space Entry, and Hot Work safety.
- Practical knowledge of mechanical systems, energy isolation methods, and safe work practices.
- Excellent organizational skills and a rigorous, safety-first mindset.
