JOB DESCRIPTION – ELECTRICAL ENGINEER
Job Summary
The Electrical Engineer is responsible for planning, designing, installing, testing, commissioning, maintaining, and troubleshooting electrical systems and equipment. The role ensures that electrical engineering activities are completed safely, efficiently, cost-effectively, and in accordance with approved designs, technical specifications, applicable standards, and statutory requirements.
The position will coordinate with Engineering, Projects, Maintenance, Procurement, Operations, QA/QC, contractors, consultants, and other stakeholders to ensure successful execution of electrical works.
Key Responsibilities
1. Electrical Engineering & Design
- Prepare and review electrical designs, drawings, specifications, calculations, and technical documents.
- Develop and review single-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, load schedules, cable schedules, and equipment layouts.
- Perform electrical load calculations, cable sizing, voltage-drop calculations, and equipment selection.
- Ensure designs comply with applicable electrical codes, standards, and project requirements.
- Review engineering drawings and technical submissions from consultants, contractors, and suppliers.
- Identify design issues and recommend technically and commercially appropriate solutions.
2. Project Execution
- Plan and supervise electrical installation activities in accordance with approved drawings and specifications.
- Coordinate electrical works with civil, mechanical, instrumentation, and other disciplines.
- Monitor project progress, quality, resources, and material requirements.
- Ensure electrical works are completed within approved schedules and budgets.
- Inspect installations to verify compliance with approved designs and technical standards.
- Coordinate with contractors and subcontractors to resolve technical issues.
3. Installation, Testing & Commissioning
- Supervise installation, testing, commissioning, and energization of electrical systems and equipment.
- Inspect cables, switchboards, transformers, generators, motors, control panels, lighting systems, earthing systems, and related equipment.
- Conduct or coordinate testing such as insulation resistance, continuity, earth resistance, protection testing, and functional testing.
- Review testing and commissioning reports.
- Ensure systems are safely energized and handed over to Operations/Maintenance.
4. Maintenance & Troubleshooting
- Provide technical support for electrical maintenance activities.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot electrical faults and equipment failures.
- Develop preventive and corrective maintenance requirements.
- Analyze recurring electrical problems and recommend permanent corrective actions.
- Support maintenance teams during breakdowns and emergency situations.
- Monitor the condition and performance of critical electrical equipment.
5. Safety & Compliance
- Ensure all electrical work is performed in accordance with approved HSE procedures and electrical safety requirements.
- Ensure proper isolation, lockout/tagout, permit-to-work, and safe energization procedures are followed.
- Identify electrical hazards and recommend appropriate control measures.
- Participate in safety inspections, risk assessments, toolbox meetings, and incident investigations when required.
- Ensure compliance with applicable electrical codes, statutory requirements, and company standards.
6. Procurement & Technical Evaluation
- Prepare technical specifications, material requisitions, and bills of quantities for electrical equipment and materials.
- Review technical offers from suppliers and contractors.
- Prepare technical bid evaluations and recommendations.
- Review vendor drawings, datasheets, manuals, and technical documentation.
- Coordinate with Procurement to ensure timely availability of required electrical materials and equipment.
7. Quality Control
- Ensure electrical works meet approved quality standards and specifications.
- Review inspection and test plans, method statements, and quality documentation.
- Identify non-conformities and coordinate corrective actions.
- Participate in inspections with clients, consultants, and third-party agencies.
- Maintain appropriate engineering and quality records.
8. Documentation & Reporting
- Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly engineering/project reports.
- Maintain electrical drawings, calculations, specifications, test reports, inspection records, and equipment documentation.
- Ensure as-built drawings and final documentation are properly prepared and updated.
- Maintain records of equipment performance, maintenance, testing, and commissioning.
- Provide technical reports and recommendations to management.
9. Coordination & Stakeholder Management
- Coordinate with project managers, engineering teams, contractors, consultants, suppliers, and clients.
- Attend technical meetings and provide engineering updates.
- Resolve technical queries and coordinate approvals.
- Provide technical guidance to technicians, supervisors, and site personnel.
- Support project handover and close-out activities.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Professional engineering certification/licensing is an advantage where applicable.
- 3–7 years of relevant experience in electrical engineering, projects, construction, industrial operations, or maintenance.
- Experience with electrical design, installation, testing, commissioning, or maintenance.
- Knowledge of relevant electrical codes, standards, and safety requirements.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and MS Office.
- Knowledge of electrical design and engineering software is an advantage.
