Generator Division - Winding Technician

Job Overview:

The Generator Division Winding Technician is a specialist focused on the core component of the generator: the stator and rotor windings. They are experts in the repair, rewinding, and refurbishment of the electromagnetic coils within generators, motors, and related rotating equipment. Their work is highly precise and critical to restoring the generator's electrical output.

Key Responsibilities:

Disassembly & Assessment:
Safely disassemble generators to access the stator and rotor.
Perform detailed visual and electrical inspections to assess winding damage (e.g., shorts, grounds, opens).
Conduct diagnostic tests like Megger (insulation resistance), Surge Comparison, and Polarization Index (PI) tests.
Winding Repair & Rewinding:
Perform in-situ repairs such as taping, tying, and varnishing of coils where possible.
For major damage, completely remove old windings, clean the core slots, and install new coil insulation.
Wind new coils onto forms or directly into the stator/rotor core using precise techniques.
Connect coils according to the specific winding diagram, ensuring correct pitch, grouping, and polarity.
Impregnation & Curing:
Impregnate windings with insulating varnish or resin using Vacuum Pressure Impregnation (VPI) or trickle methods.
Bake and cure the windings in ovens to harden the insulation and create a solid, thermally conductive mass.
Final Assembly & Testing:
Reassemble the generator, ensuring all components are correctly aligned and seated.
Perform final electrical tests, including high-potential (hipot) testing, to verify the integrity and dielectric strength of the new windings.
Balance rotors as required.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

Completion of a formal winding apprenticeship or extensive on-the-job training.
In-depth knowledge of winding theory, techniques, and patterns for various types of AC/DC machines.
Proficiency in using specialized winding tools, coil winders, and impregnation systems.
Ability to read and interpret complex winding diagrams and data plates.
Meticulous attention to detail, manual dexterity, and patience for repetitive, precise work.
Strong understanding of insulation systems and materials (e.g., Nomex, Mica, Polyester).
