Detailed Job Description:
A Respiratory Therapist is a specialized healthcare practitioner who assesses, treats, and cares for patients with cardiopulmonary (heart and lung) disorders. They work with patients of all ages, from premature infants to the elderly, in various settings including emergency rooms, intensive care units, and general wards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assess patients' cardiopulmonary status through physical examination and diagnostic tests (e.g., blood gas analysis, pulmonary function tests).
- Administer various respiratory care modalities, including oxygen therapy, aerosolized medications, chest physiotherapy, and lung expansion therapy.
- Manage and monitor patients on mechanical ventilators in the ICU.
- Perform emergency airway management and assist with endotracheal intubations.
- Conduct diagnostic procedures such as Arterial Blood Gas (ABG) draws and analysis, and Pulmonary Function Tests (PFTs).
- Provide life support in Code Blue and other emergency situations.
- Educate patients and families on lung diseases, breathing exercises, and the use of respiratory equipment at home.
- Maintain and troubleshoot respiratory care equipment.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Mandatory License: Valid MOH / DHA License or Eligibility Letter.
- Education: Associate or Bachelor’s Degree in Respiratory Therapy from an accredited program.
- Certification: Valid credential as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) or Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) from a recognized board (e.g., NBRC, CSRT) is typically required.
- Experience: Minimum of 2-3 years of clinical experience, with experience in an adult and/or neonatal ICU being highly valued.
Required Skills:
- Comprehensive knowledge of cardiopulmonary physiology, pathophysiology, and pharmacology.
- Proficiency in advanced life support, ventilator management, and critical care procedures.
- Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills in high-stress situations.
- Strong interpersonal and patient education skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
