Position Summary
We are seeking a skilled and tech-savvy Pavement Engineer with direct hands-on experience operating the LCMS-2 (Laser Crack Measurement System) data acquisition vehicle. In this role, you will be responsible for the end-to-end process of pavement condition data collection, from planning the survey missions to processing the data and generating actionable reports. Your expertise will be critical in delivering high-quality, accurate data that forms the foundation of our clients' pavement management programs.
Key Responsibilities
- LCMS-2 Operations & Data Collection:
- Operate and manage the LCMS-2 system mounted on a survey vehicle, ensuring all sensors (lasers, cameras, IMU, DMI, GPS) are calibrated and functioning correctly.
- Plan and execute efficient data collection missions, adhering to project-specific protocols and safety standards.
- Perform daily system checks, pre- and post-mission calibrations, and basic troubleshooting of hardware and software issues in the field.
- Ensure the integrity and quality of raw data collected during surveys.
- Data Processing & Analysis:
- Process raw LCMS-2 data using proprietary software (e.g., RoadRecorder, DYS) to extract pavement distress metrics, including cracking, rutting, roughness (IRI), and macrotexture.
- Perform quality control and quality assurance (QC/QA) on processed data to ensure accuracy and consistency.
- Classify and interpret pavement conditions based on established standards (e.g., ASTM, State DOT specifications).
- Reporting & Project Support:
- Generate comprehensive pavement condition reports and data deliverables for clients.
- Work with senior engineers to analyse data trends and contribute to pavement evaluation and rehabilitation recommendations.
- Assist in the development and maintenance of Pavement Management Systems (PMS) by providing reliable condition data.
- Provide technical support and insights for proposals and client meetings related to data collection services.
Qualifications & Experience
Required:
- B.Sc. in Civil Engineering, Surveying, Geomatics, or a related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of professional experience operating a data acquisition vehicle, with specific, hands-on experience with the LCMS-2 system.
- Proficiency with LCMS-2 data processing software (e.g., RoadRecorder, Data Viewer Studio).
- Solid understanding of pavement distress types (longitudinal, transverse, alligator cracking, rutting, etc.) and their identification.
- Willingness and ability to travel extensively (up to 50-75%) for project work.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
Preferred:
- E.I.T. (Engineer in Training) or P.E. (Professional Engineer) license.
- Experience with other pavement data collection systems (e.g., ARAN, Hawkeye, PaveVision).
- Experience with GIS software (ArcGIS, QGIS) and database management.
- Knowledge of scripting (e.g., Python, R) for data manipulation and automation is a plus.
Skills & Competencies
- Technical Proficiency: Deep, practical knowledge of the LCMS-2 hardware and software suite.
- Analytical Mindset: Strong data analysis and problem-solving skills with a keen attention to detail.
- Independence: Ability to work independently in the field with minimal supervision.
- Communication: Ability to document procedures clearly and communicate technical findings effectively to team members.
- Adaptability: Flexibility to handle changing schedules, project demands, and travel requirements.
Working Conditions
- This role is split between field deployment and office-based data processing.
- Extensive travel is a core requirement of this position. Project work may involve consecutive weeks on the road, often covering large geographic regions.
- Field work involves long hours inside a vehicle and requires adherence to strict traffic safety protocols.
