Position Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Pavement Engineer to serve as a technical expert and project leader on a wide range of pavement projects. The ideal candidate will be responsible for the design, analysis, and management of pavement rehabilitation, preservation, and new construction projects. You will provide senior-level oversight, mentor junior staff, and drive technical excellence in all aspects of pavement engineering, from investigation and materials testing to innovative design and construction support.
Key Responsibilities
- Technical Leadership & Design:
- Lead the design and analysis of flexible (asphalt), rigid (concrete), and composite pavement systems for highways, airports, local roads, and industrial applications.
- Perform pavement structural evaluations using mechanistic-empirical methods (e.g., AASHTOWare Pavement ME Design) and empirical methods.
- Develop detailed plans, specifications, and estimates (PS&E) for pavement projects.
- Conduct life-cycle cost analysis (LCCA) to recommend the most economical and sustainable pavement solutions.
- Project & Client Management:
- Manage pavement-related projects, ensuring they are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.
- Serve as the primary technical point of contact for clients, agencies, and contractors on pavement matters.
- Prepare and review technical reports, feasibility studies, and pavement management system (PMS) reports.
- Construction Support & Forensic Engineering:
- Provide technical support during construction, including reviewing submittals, responding to RFIs, and resolving field issues.
- Perform forensic investigations of pavement failures, determine root causes, and recommend effective remediation strategies.
- Oversee and interpret materials testing data, including asphalt mix design, concrete properties, and in-situ density/strength.
- Research and Innovation:
- Stay abreast of and implement emerging technologies and materials, such as warm-mix asphalt, recycled materials (RAP, RAS), and perpetual pavements.
- Lead or contribute to research initiatives and the development of best practices for pavement design and preservation.
- Mentorship & Business Development:
- Provide guidance, training, and mentorship to junior and staff engineers.
- Assist in business development activities, including proposal writing, client presentations, and cultivating new client relationships.
Qualifications & Experience
Required:
- B.Sc. in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) license.
- Minimum of 8+ years of progressive experience in pavement engineering, with a focus on design, analysis, and materials.
- Proven expertise with pavement design software (e.g., AASHTOWare Pavement ME Design, MnPAVE, DARWin).
- Deep understanding of pavement materials, construction techniques, and industry standards (AASHTO, ASTM, state DOT specifications).
- Strong experience in managing projects and interacting with clients.
Preferred:
- M.Sc. in Civil Engineering with a focus on Geotechnical or Pavement Engineering.
- Professional certifications (e.g., NICET Level IV in Asphalt or Soils, APWA Certified Public Infrastructure Inspector).
- Experience with pavement management systems (PMS) and asset management principles.
- Demonstrated experience in forensic pavement investigation and rehabilitation design.
- Established relationships with state or local transportation agencies.
Skills & Competencies
- Technical Expertise: Mastery of pavement design methodologies, materials science, and mechanistic-empirical principles.
- Analytical & Problem-Solving: Excellent analytical skills with the ability to solve complex, non-routine engineering problems.
- Leadership: Proven ability to lead projects and mentor a technical team.
- Communication: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts clearly to diverse audiences, including clients and public stakeholders.
- Detail-Oriented: Meticulous attention to detail in calculations, design, and documentation.
- Project Management: Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines effectively.
Working Conditions
- This role is primarily office-based but requires occasional travel to project sites, client meetings, and conferences.
- Site visits may involve walking on active construction sites and exposure to typical outdoor weather conditions.
