Job Overview:
We are seeking an inspiring and knowledgeable English Teacher to join our vibrant school community. The ideal candidate will foster a deep appreciation for literature, language, and writing in students from grades 7 through 12. You will be responsible for delivering a rigorous, engaging curriculum that develops students' critical thinking, analytical writing, and verbal communication skills. You will guide students through a diverse range of literary works, from classic novels to contemporary texts, while honing their ability to craft compelling narratives and persuasive arguments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Curriculum Development & Instruction:
- Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging and differentiated lesson plans that align with school, state, and national standards.
- Teach a variety of literary genres, including poetry, drama, fiction, and non-fiction.
- Instruct students in the fundamentals of grammar, vocabulary, and composition, emphasizing the writing process (prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing).
- Integrate technology effectively into the classroom to enhance learning and engagement.
- Prepare students for standardized tests, AP/IB examinations (if applicable), and college-level writing expectations.
- Assessment & Evaluation:
- Design and administer a variety of assessments (essays, projects, presentations, quizzes) to measure student progress.
- Provide timely, constructive, and personalized feedback on student work to support their academic growth.
- Maintain accurate and complete records of student attendance, achievement, and progress.
- Classroom Environment:
- Create a positive, inclusive, and respectful classroom environment that encourages student voice and intellectual risk-taking.
- Establish and communicate clear expectations for student behavior, fostering a culture of mutual respect and academic focus.
- Collaboration & Communication:
- Collaborate with colleagues within the English department and across other disciplines to create interdisciplinary learning opportunities.
- Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress, concerns, and achievements through conferences, emails, and reports.
- Participate in department, faculty, and parent-teacher meetings.
- Extracurricular & Professional Development:
- Participate in and contribute to the school's extracurricular activities (e.g., sponsoring the literary magazine, coaching debate team, advising the drama club).
- Engage in ongoing professional development to stay current with best practices in English education and pedagogy.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in English, Literature, Education, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
- Valid state teaching certification for secondary English/Language Arts.
- Proven experience teaching English at the middle and/or high school level.
- Strong classroom management skills and the ability to build rapport with adolescents.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- A genuine passion for literature and a commitment to fostering a love of reading and writing in all students.
