Accountant – Job Description
Job Title: Accountant / Staff Accountant / General Accountant
Department: Finance / Accounts / Administration
Reports To: Finance Manager / Chief Accountant / Financial Controller
Job Summary
An Accountant is responsible for managing financial records, preparing reports, ensuring accuracy of financial transactions, and maintaining compliance with accounting standards and regulations. The role supports budgeting, auditing, payroll, taxation, and financial planning to ensure proper financial control and decision-making.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Recording & Bookkeeping
- Record daily financial transactions accurately in accounting systems.
- Maintain general ledger accounts and journal entries.
- Reconcile bank statements and company accounts.
- Ensure proper classification of income and expenses.
Accounts Payable & Receivable
- Process supplier invoices and ensure timely payments.
- Manage customer billing and collections.
- Track outstanding payments and follow up on receivables.
- Maintain vendor and customer account records.
Financial Reporting
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Generate profit and loss statements, balance sheets, and cash flow reports.
- Assist in financial analysis and variance reporting.
- Support management with financial insights for decision-making.
Budgeting & Cost Control
- Assist in preparing annual budgets and forecasts.
- Monitor expenses against approved budgets.
- Identify cost-saving opportunities.
- Support cost control initiatives within the organization.
Taxation & Compliance
- Assist in preparing tax returns and filings (VAT, GST, corporate tax, etc.).
- Ensure compliance with local tax laws and accounting standards.
- Maintain records for audits and regulatory inspections.
- Coordinate with external auditors and tax consultants.
Payroll Support
- Assist in monthly payroll processing.
- Ensure accurate calculation of salaries, deductions, and benefits.
- Maintain payroll records and employee compensation data.
- Coordinate with HR for payroll inputs.
Audit & Internal Controls
- Support internal and external audit processes.
- Ensure adherence to accounting policies and procedures.
- Identify and report financial discrepancies.
- Maintain strong internal control systems.
Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain financial documents, invoices, and records systematically.
- Ensure proper filing and storage of accounting records.
- Prepare financial summaries and reports for management.
- Update accounting databases and ERP systems.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, or related field.
- 2–7+ years of experience in accounting or finance roles.
- Professional certifications such as ACCA, CPA, CMA, or CA is an advantage.
- Knowledge of accounting principles and financial regulations.
