Position Overview
The Saddle Stitcher Machine Operator plays a critical role in the finishing department by operating high-speed saddle stitching equipment used in the production of magazines, brochures, catalogues, and booklets. This role requires strong technical knowledge of binding mechanics, attention to detail, and the ability to maintain consistent production quality in a fast-paced commercial printing environment.
The operator is responsible not only for machine setup and production but also for quality control, preventive maintenance, and workflow coordination with upstream and downstream departments.
Detailed Key Responsibilities
Machine Setup & Calibration
- Set up saddle stitching machines according to job specifications, including trim size, stitch placement, fold accuracy, and sheet count
- Adjust stitch heads, wire feed mechanisms, trimmers, and conveyors for optimal performance
- Configure feeders to ensure accurate sheet feeding and alignment
- Conduct test runs and fine-tune adjustments before full-scale production
- Ensure correct stitch length, penetration depth, and wire tension
Production Management
- Monitor continuous production runs to ensure smooth operation
- Maintain high output levels while minimizing downtime
- Ensure proper stacking and delivery of finished materials
- Coordinate with press operators and cutting departments to manage workflow timing
- Meet daily and weekly production targets
Quality Control
- Inspect stitched products for alignment accuracy, secure binding, trimming precision, and overall presentation
- Identify defects such as loose stitches, misfeeds, trimming errors, or paper jams
- Maintain strict adherence to client specifications and international print quality standards
- Document quality deviations and implement corrective actions
Maintenance & Troubleshooting
- Perform routine preventive maintenance including cleaning, lubrication, and parts inspection
- Replace worn-out components such as stitching heads or cutting blades
- Diagnose mechanical or electrical issues and coordinate with maintenance teams when required
- Maintain machine logbooks and maintenance records
Safety & Compliance
- Follow industrial safety standards and proper machine guarding protocols
- Ensure safe handling of sharp components and moving machinery
- Maintain clean and hazard-free work areas
- Participate in workplace safety training programs
