A Welding Inspector is responsible for ensuring that welding work and related activities meet required quality standards, codes, and safety regulations. The role is critical in industries where structural integrity and safety depend on proper welding practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Inspect welding activities before, during, and after fabrication or installation
- Verify welding procedures, materials, and qualifications (WPS, PQR, welder certifications)
- Examine welds for defects such as cracks, porosity, and incomplete fusion
- Conduct or witness non-destructive testing (NDT) like ultrasonic, radiographic, or dye penetrant tests
- Ensure compliance with industry standards and codes (e.g., ASME, AWS, API)
- Review technical drawings, welding symbols, and specifications
- Monitor heat treatment and welding parameters
- Prepare inspection reports and maintain quality documentation
- Coordinate with QA/QC teams, engineers, and site supervisors
Required Skills
- Strong knowledge of welding processes (SMAW, GTAW, MIG, TIG, etc.)
- Familiarity with welding codes and standards
- Ability to read and interpret drawings and welding symbols
- Knowledge of NDT methods and quality control procedures
- Attention to detail and strong observational skills
- Good reporting and communication abilities
Qualifications
- Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical/Metallurgical Engineering or related field
- Certification such as CSWIP, AWS-CWI, or equivalent (highly preferred)
- Relevant experience in welding inspection or fabrication
Work Environment
- Field-based role in construction sites, fabrication yards, shipyards, or industrial plants
