Job Description: Senior Resident Engineer
Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced and technically strong Senior Resident Engineer to oversee construction activities, ensure compliance with approved designs and specifications, and provide technical leadership at the project site.
The Senior Resident Engineer will act as the primary engineering representative on site, coordinating with the client, consultant, contractor, subcontractors, and project management team to ensure the project is delivered safely, within quality standards, on schedule, and in accordance with contractual requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise the engineering and construction supervision team at the project site.
- Monitor and control construction activities to ensure compliance with approved drawings, specifications, method statements, and contract requirements.
- Act as the key technical point of contact between the client, consultant, contractor, subcontractors, and project management team.
- Review and provide technical comments on drawings, shop drawings, material submittals, method statements, and technical documents.
- Monitor construction progress against the approved project schedule and identify potential delays or risks.
- Ensure that construction works are executed according to approved quality standards and applicable codes and regulations.
- Supervise site inspections, testing, commissioning, and quality-control activities.
- Review inspection requests, material approvals, test results, and quality documentation.
- Identify construction issues and coordinate with relevant stakeholders to develop practical technical solutions.
- Monitor contractor performance and ensure compliance with contractual obligations.
- Review variations, claims, extensions of time, and other contractual matters in coordination with the project management team.
- Participate in progress meetings with clients, contractors, consultants, and other stakeholders.
- Prepare and review daily, weekly, and monthly project reports.
- Monitor project milestones, critical activities, resources, and construction productivity.
- Coordinate engineering disciplines to resolve site-related technical and interface issues.
- Ensure that health, safety, environmental, and site-security requirements are properly implemented.
- Support project cost control and monitor the impact of variations and changes.
- Maintain proper records of site activities, inspections, approvals, instructions, correspondence, and project documentation.
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior engineers and site supervision staff.
- Assist the Project Manager/Project Director with strategic project decisions and risk management.
- Ensure timely completion, testing, handover, and closeout of the project.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- 10–15 years of relevant experience in construction supervision, infrastructure projects, engineering consultancy, or project management.
- Proven experience in a senior site engineering or Resident Engineer role.
- Strong knowledge of construction methods, engineering standards, specifications, and quality-control procedures.
- Experience managing contractors, subcontractors, consultants, and multidisciplinary project teams.
- Strong understanding of project schedules, construction planning, quality management, and contract administration.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, BOQs, and technical documents.
- Strong knowledge of health, safety, and environmental requirements.
- Excellent communication, leadership, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Proficiency in MS Office and relevant engineering/project management software.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional engineering registration or equivalent certification.
- PMP, PRINCE2, or other project management certification.
- Experience with FIDIC or other international forms of construction contracts.
- Experience with AutoCAD, Primavera P6, MS Project, or similar project management tools.
- Previous experience working on large-scale infrastructure, commercial, residential, industrial, road, bridge, or utility projects.
