Kitchen Commis – Job Description
Role Overview
A Kitchen Commis is an entry-level chef position responsible for assisting senior kitchen staff in food preparation, basic cooking tasks, and maintaining cleanliness in the kitchen. The role is designed for learning and skill development in a professional kitchen environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist chefs in basic food preparation tasks (cutting, chopping, peeling, marinating, etc.)
- Follow recipes and instructions given by senior chefs (CDPs and Sous Chefs)
- Prepare ingredients and mise en place before service
- Maintain cleanliness and hygiene in assigned kitchen sections
- Wash, clean, and properly store kitchen utensils and equipment
- Ensure proper storage and labeling of food items
- Assist in simple cooking tasks under supervision
- Follow food safety and hygiene standards at all times
- Support smooth kitchen operations during busy service hours
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Diploma or certification in Culinary Arts or Hospitality (preferred but not mandatory)
- Basic understanding of kitchen operations and food preparation
- Willingness to learn and work in a fast-paced environment
- Good hygiene practices and attention to cleanliness
- Ability to follow instructions accurately
- Physical stamina to work long hours in a kitchen
Preferred Qualifications
- Internship or training experience in hotels, restaurants, or catering services
- Basic knowledge of food safety and hygiene standards (HACCP awareness is a plus)
