Job Summary
An ICU Specialist (Critical Care Specialist) is responsible for diagnosing, monitoring, and treating critically ill patients in the Intensive Care Unit. The role involves managing life-threatening conditions, coordinating multidisciplinary care, supervising ICU procedures, and ensuring high standards of patient safety and clinical outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
- Assess, diagnose, and manage critically ill patients in ICU settings.
- Monitor patients with life-threatening conditions including:
- Sepsis
- Respiratory failure
- Multi-organ dysfunction
- Cardiac emergencies
- Trauma and post-operative complications
- Develop and implement individualized treatment plans.
- Manage ventilators, invasive monitoring systems, and life-support equipment.
- Perform ICU procedures such as:
- Intubation
- Central venous catheter insertion
- Arterial line placement
- Chest tube insertion
- Advanced airway management
- Respond to emergency situations and code blue activations.
Patient Monitoring & Care
- Continuously monitor patient progress and modify treatment plans as required.
- Interpret laboratory investigations, imaging, and hemodynamic data.
- Ensure infection control and ICU safety protocols are followed.
Collaboration & Communication
- Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams including:
- Surgeons
- Anesthesiologists
- Pulmonologists
- Nurses
- Physiotherapists
- Communicate patient condition and treatment plans to families.
Administrative & Academic Duties
- Maintain accurate medical records and ICU documentation.
- Participate in clinical audits, mortality reviews, and quality improvement programs.
- Train junior doctors, residents, and nursing staff.
- Stay updated with advances in critical care medicine.
Required Qualifications
- MBBS with MD/DNB/DM in Critical Care Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, Anesthesiology, or Internal Medicine.
- Valid medical license/registration.
- ACLS/BLS certification preferred.
- Fellowship in Critical Care Medicine is an advantage.
Required Skills

- Expertise in ventilator management and emergency procedures.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work under pressure in high-acuity environments.
- Knowledge of ICU protocols and infection control standards.

Experience Requirements
- 2–5+ years of ICU/critical care experience preferred.
- Experience in tertiary care or multispecialty hospitals is advantageous.
