Piling Estimator – Job Description
Job Title: Piling Estimator / Civil Estimator (Piling Works)
Department: Estimation / Tendering / Pre-Contract
Reports To: Estimation Manager / Tender Manager / Commercial Manager
Job Summary
A Piling Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate cost estimates for piling and foundation works in construction and infrastructure projects. The role involves analyzing tender documents, drawings, soil reports, and specifications to determine material, labor, equipment, and subcontractor costs for piling activities such as bored piles, driven piles, sheet piles, and foundation systems.
Key Responsibilities
Tender Analysis & Quantity Takeoff
- Review tender documents, drawings, specifications, and geotechnical reports.
- Perform quantity takeoff for piling works including piles, reinforcement, concrete, casing, and accessories.
- Analyze soil investigation reports to determine piling methodology and costs.
- Identify scope of work and project requirements.
Cost Estimation & Pricing
- Prepare detailed cost estimates for piling activities.
- Calculate costs for labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractors.
- Estimate productivity rates for different piling methods.
- Prepare unit rates for bored piles, driven piles, sheet piles, and micro piles.
Methodology & Technical Evaluation
- Evaluate suitable piling methods based on soil conditions and project requirements.
- Assess construction methodologies and equipment requirements (rigs, hammers, cranes).
- Coordinate with engineering and site teams for technical inputs.
- Identify risks and constraints affecting piling operations.
Vendor & Subcontractor Coordination
- Obtain quotations from piling subcontractors and suppliers.
- Evaluate vendor offers for technical and commercial compliance.
- Compare subcontractor rates and negotiate pricing.
- Maintain vendor database for piling-related services.
Risk & Cost Analysis
- Identify project risks related to soil conditions, access, and execution.
- Evaluate cost implications of design changes or uncertainties.
- Prepare contingency allowances in estimates.
- Support value engineering proposals.
Tender Preparation & Submission
- Prepare detailed BOQs (Bill of Quantities) for piling works.
- Compile cost breakdowns and tender pricing sheets.
- Support preparation of technical and commercial bid submissions.
- Ensure timely submission of complete tender documents.
Coordination & Communication
- Coordinate with design, planning, procurement, and project teams.
- Attend tender clarification meetings and site visits.
- Communicate assumptions, exclusions, and clarifications clearly in bids.
- Support post-tender negotiations.
Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain records of estimates, rates, and tender submissions.
- Update cost databases and historical project data.
- Prepare comparative analysis of tenders.
- Document lessons learned from completed projects.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
- 3–10+ years of experience in estimation, especially piling or foundation works.
- Experience in infrastructure, construction, geotechnical, or EPC projects preferred.
- Knowledge of piling methods and soil mechanics is essential.
