PHARMACY TECHNICIAN

Reporting To: Senior Pharmacist / Pharmacy Supervisor
Job Purpose:
To support the pharmacy department's operational efficiency under the direct supervision of a licensed Pharmacist. Key duties include the accurate preparation and dispensing of medications, inventory management, and administrative tasks to ensure a smooth workflow and allow pharmacists to focus on clinical services.
Key Responsibilities:
Medication Preparation & Dispensing Support:
- Accurately select, count, pour, weigh, measure, and package medications as per the pharmacist-verified prescription or medication order.
- Prepare sterile compounded products (e.g., IV admixtures, TPN, chemotherapy) in accordance with aseptic technique in a cleanroom environment (if assigned to IV services).
- Pre-pack bulk medications into unit-dose packages and label them correctly.
- Operate and maintain automated dispensing cabinets (Pyxis, Omnicell) on patient care units, including restocking and discrepancy resolution.
- Manage the pharmacy's outpatient dispensing window under the pharmacist's final verification.
Inventory & Supply Chain Management:
- Perform daily stock takes, monitor par levels, and generate purchase orders for routine medications and supplies.
- Receive, verify, and store incoming pharmaceutical orders, checking for correct quantities and temperatures.
- Maintain proper storage conditions and organize the pharmacy stockroom (e.g., cold chain management, FIFO rotation).
- Process returns and manage the removal of expired/recalled drugs.
Administrative & Clerical Duties:
- Manage patient profiles and input prescription data into the pharmacy computer system.
- Handle billing, insurance claims processing, and co-payment collection as per UAE health insurance schemes (Thiqa, Daman, etc.).
- Answer phone calls, direct inquiries to the pharmacist, and manage the pharmacy's front-end operations.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
Compliance & Team Support:
- Adhere to all DOH Abu Dhabi, MOHAP, and institutional policies, especially those related to controlled substances and sterile compounding.
- Assist pharmacists with medication reconciliation documentation and other quality control tasks.
- Participate in departmental training and meetings.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Education: Diploma in Pharmacy Technology from an accredited institution or a relevant healthcare certification.
- Licensure/Certification: Mandatory. Valid DOH Abu Dhabi license as a "Pharmacy Assistant" or "Pharmacy Technician." National certification (e.g., CPhT) is an advantage.
- Experience: Previous experience in a hospital or retail pharmacy setting in the UAE is preferred.
- Skills:
- Strong numerical and organizational skills.
- Proficiency in English; Arabic is highly beneficial for patient interaction.
- Ability to work accurately, efficiently, and under pressure in a team.
- Basic computer literacy (MS Office, pharmacy software).
