Job Title: Heavy Truck Mechanical Technician
Job Summary
A Heavy Truck Mechanical Technician is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining heavy trucks and commercial vehicles to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation. The role involves performing preventive maintenance, troubleshooting mechanical and electrical systems, and ensuring all work complies with manufacturer specifications and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Inspect, diagnose, and repair mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and engine-related faults on heavy trucks.
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance, including oil changes, lubrication, filter replacement, and fluid checks.
- Repair and service engines, transmissions, clutches, differentials, suspension, steering, and braking systems.
- Diagnose faults using computerized diagnostic equipment and technical manuals.
- Replace worn or damaged parts and components using appropriate tools and equipment.
- Conduct road tests to verify repairs and vehicle performance.
- Maintain accurate service records, inspection reports, and maintenance logs.
- Ensure compliance with manufacturer specifications, company policies, and safety regulations.
- Inspect vehicles to ensure they meet roadworthiness and operational standards.
- Maintain workshop tools, equipment, and a clean, organized work area.
- Respond to emergency breakdowns and perform field repairs when required.
- Collaborate with supervisors and other technicians to complete maintenance and repair work efficiently.
Qualifications
- Diploma, certificate, or vocational training in Heavy Vehicle Mechanics, Automotive Technology, or a related field.
- Proven experience in the maintenance and repair of heavy trucks or commercial vehicles.
- Relevant trade certification or mechanic license (where required) is preferred.
- Valid driver's license; a commercial driver's license (CDL) is an advantage where applicable.
Skills
- Strong knowledge of diesel engines and heavy vehicle mechanical systems.
- Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and electronic systems.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and service documentation.
- Skilled in using diagnostic software, testing equipment, and workshop tools.
- Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work independently and under pressure.
Working Conditions
- Workshop and field service environments.
- Exposure to noise, grease, fumes, heavy machinery, and varying weather conditions.
