Job Title: Commercial Lines Underwriter
Job Summary:
The Commercial Lines Underwriter is responsible for evaluating and underwriting insurance risks for commercial clients. This role involves analyzing applications, determining coverage terms, pricing policies, and ensuring profitable risk selection in line with company guidelines and regulatory standards.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Risk Assessment & Underwriting
- Evaluate commercial insurance applications (property, liability, motor, etc.)
- Analyze risk exposures, financial statements, and loss histories
- Determine appropriate coverage, limits, terms, and pricing
2. Policy Management
- Underwrite new business, renewals, and endorsements
- Review and approve policy documentation
- Ensure accuracy and compliance with underwriting guidelines
3. Broker & Client Relationship Management
- Build and maintain relationships with brokers, agents, and clients
- Provide underwriting guidance and support to distribution partners
- Negotiate terms and conditions to secure profitable business
4. Portfolio Management
- Monitor portfolio performance, loss ratios, and profitability
- Identify trends and recommend corrective actions
- Maintain a balanced and diversified book of business
5. Compliance & Regulations
- Ensure adherence to regulatory requirements and internal policies
- Maintain proper documentation and audit trails
- Stay updated on industry regulations and market developments
6. Collaboration
- Work closely with claims, actuarial, and risk engineering teams
- Support product development and pricing strategies
- Contribute to process improvements and automation initiatives
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business Administration, Insurance, or related field
- Professional certifications (e.g., ACII, CPCU) are an advantage
- 3–6+ years of experience in commercial underwriting
- Strong analytical and decision-making skills
- Knowledge of commercial insurance products and risk evaluation
