Position Overview:
The Cabling Technician is responsible for the physical installation, termination, testing, and maintenance of structured cabling systems. This role ensures the integrity and reliability of voice, data, video, and security network infrastructure in both new and existing facilities. The technician works closely with network engineers and project managers to deliver high-quality, standards-compliant cabling solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Install, terminate, test, and label CAT5e, CAT6, CAT6A, and fiber optic (multimode/singlemode) cabling in accordance with BICSI, TIA/EIA, and company standards.
- Install and dress cable pathways, including conduit, cable tray, J-hooks, and innerduct.
- Build out and install equipment racks, cabinets, and related components (patch panels, cable management, power strips).
- Perform cable testing and certification using tools like Fluke DSX or similar analyzers; document results for client deliverables.
- Troubleshoot and resolve cabling issues related to connectivity, performance, and physical integrity.
- Adhere to strict safety protocols, including ladder safety, personal protective equipment (PPE), and worksite cleanliness.
- Maintain accurate inventory of materials, tools, and equipment.
- Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and installation design packages.
- Provide support for network equipment installation and basic configuration as directed.
- Participate in after-hours or weekend project work as required.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Required: High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Preferred: BICSI Installer 2 (IT2), Technician (TECH), or equivalent certification.
- Required: Minimum 2-3 years of hands-on structured cabling experience.
- Proficient in the use of cabling tools (punch-down tools, crimpers, fiber splicers, OTDRs, certification testers).
- Strong understanding of network topologies, copper and fiber cable types, and industry standards.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team with minimal supervision.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to various job sites.
- Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs, work in ceilings, crawl spaces, and on ladders.
