Procurement Engineer
Role Overview:
The Procurement Engineer is a technical specialist role that bridges the gap between engineering/technical requirements and commercial procurement. They ensure that the purchased materials, components, or equipment meet precise technical specifications, quality standards, and are sourced from technically capable suppliers. Common in manufacturing, construction, oil & gas, and tech industries.
Key Responsibilities:
- Analyze technical drawings, specifications, and bills of materials (BOMs) from the engineering department.
- Identify and pre-qualify suppliers based on their technical capabilities, manufacturing processes, and quality control systems.
- Lead technical discussions with suppliers and participate in design-for-manufacture reviews.
- Evaluate supplier proposals for technical compliance, not just commercial terms.
- Manage the procurement of critical, complex, or engineered items (e.g., raw materials, machinery, custom parts).
- Collaborate with Quality Assurance on supplier audits, inspection protocols, and resolving technical non-conformities.
- Support value engineering/analysis initiatives to reduce cost without compromising function.
- Manage technical documentation and ensure it is properly transferred.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Industrial, Electrical, Chemical, or related).
- Experience: 3+ years in procurement, sourcing, or quality within a technical/engineering environment.
- Technical Skills: Deep understanding of engineering principles, manufacturing processes, and quality standards (ISO, ASME). Proficient in reading technical docs. ERP knowledge is essential.
- Soft Skills: Analytical thinking, strong negotiation (on specs and cost), project management, and excellent cross-functional collaboration skills.
