Quantity Surveyor (QS) Engineer
Job Summary
The Quantity Surveyor (QS) Engineer is responsible for managing all aspects of project costs from pre-construction through project completion. The role ensures that projects are delivered within budget while maintaining quality and compliance with contractual requirements. Responsibilities include quantity take-offs, cost estimation, tendering, contract administration, valuation of work, variation management, and final account preparation.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare detailed quantity take-offs from drawings and specifications.
- Develop cost estimates, budgets, and Bills of Quantities (BOQs).
- Review tender documents and prepare bid evaluations and recommendations.
- Analyze quotations from suppliers and subcontractors.
- Administer construction contracts and ensure compliance with contractual obligations.
- Measure and value completed work for interim payment applications and certifications.
- Prepare, evaluate, and negotiate variations, change orders, and claims.
- Monitor project costs, cash flow, and budget performance throughout the project lifecycle.
- Identify cost-saving opportunities and recommend value engineering solutions.
- Maintain accurate records of project costs, contracts, and financial documentation.
- Coordinate with project managers, engineers, contractors, consultants, and clients.
- Prepare monthly cost reports, forecasts, and financial progress reports.
- Assist in dispute resolution and contract negotiations where required.
- Prepare and agree on final accounts upon project completion.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, industry standards, and applicable regulations.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Quantity Surveying, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related discipline.
- Professional membership or certification (e.g., RICS, AIQS, CIOB, or equivalent) is preferred.
- 3–10+ years of relevant experience in quantity surveying or cost engineering.
- Experience with building, infrastructure, industrial, or MEP projects is an advantage.
Required Skills
- Strong knowledge of quantity surveying principles, construction methods, and cost management.
- Proficiency in quantity take-off and estimating software.
- Experience with Microsoft Excel, AutoCAD, Primavera P6, Microsoft Project, or similar project management tools.
- Thorough understanding of construction contracts and procurement processes.
- Knowledge of FIDIC or other standard forms of contract is an advantage.
- Excellent analytical, numerical, and negotiation skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
Working Conditions
- Combination of office-based work and regular site visits.
- May require travel to project locations and meetings with clients or contractors.
- Occasional extended working hours to meet project deadlines and tender submission schedules.
