Job Description:
A Medical Underwriter is responsible for evaluating health insurance applications by assessing medical, financial, and occupational risks to determine eligibility, coverage terms, and premium rates. The role involves analyzing medical records, underwriting guidelines, and regulatory requirements to make sound underwriting decisions while maintaining a balance between risk management, customer service, and business objectives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Review and evaluate health and life insurance applications using medical, financial, and occupational information.
- Assess applicants' medical histories, diagnostic reports, laboratory results, and physician statements to determine insurability.
- Analyze risk factors and determine appropriate coverage, policy terms, exclusions, and premium rates in accordance with underwriting guidelines.
- Make underwriting decisions within assigned authority limits and escalate complex cases when necessary.
- Ensure compliance with company underwriting policies, industry regulations, and legal requirements.
- Communicate underwriting decisions and requirements to agents, brokers, healthcare providers, and internal stakeholders.
- Request additional medical documentation or clarification when necessary to complete risk assessments.
- Maintain accurate underwriting records and documentation within underwriting systems.
- Monitor underwriting quality, consistency, and turnaround times to meet service level agreements.
- Collaborate with claims, actuarial, legal, compliance, and customer service teams to resolve underwriting-related issues.
- Stay informed about medical advancements, underwriting practices, and regulatory changes affecting insurance products.
- Participate in process improvement initiatives to enhance underwriting efficiency and accuracy.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Life Sciences, Health Sciences, Insurance, or a related field.
- Professional certifications in insurance underwriting or medical underwriting are an advantage.
- Previous experience in medical underwriting, health insurance, life insurance, or clinical healthcare is preferred.
- Strong understanding of medical terminology, diseases, diagnostic procedures, and insurance underwriting principles.
