Job Description – Structural Draftsman
A Structural Draftsman is responsible for preparing detailed technical drawings and models for structural engineering projects. They convert engineering designs and calculations into accurate construction drawings used by site teams, contractors, and engineers.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare structural drawings for buildings, industrial facilities, and infrastructure projects.
- Create detailed drawings for concrete structures, steel structures, foundations, beams, columns, slabs, and reinforcement details.
- Interpret engineering sketches, calculations, and design specifications.
- Develop shop drawings, fabrication drawings, and as-built drawings.
- Coordinate with structural engineers, architects, and site teams.
- Revise drawings based on engineering comments and project requirements.
- Ensure drawings comply with project standards, codes, and client specifications.
- Maintain proper documentation and drawing registers.
- Assist in preparing material quantity take-offs (BOQ) when required.
Requirements
- Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or Drafting.
- Typically 3–7 years of experience as a Structural Draftsman.
- Experience in construction, industrial, or oil & gas projects is preferred.
- Strong knowledge of structural drafting principles and construction practices.
- Ability to read engineering drawings and specifications.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in:
- AutoCAD
- Revit Structure (preferred)
- BIM modeling tools (advantageous)
- Knowledge of:
- Reinforcement detailing
- Steel structure drawings
- Concrete detailing
- Structural standards and codes
- Understanding of shop drawings and construction documentation.
Typical Duties
- Prepare reinforcement drawings (rebar details).
- Draft structural plans, elevations, and sections.
- Prepare steel fabrication and erection drawings.
- Update drawings according to site changes.
- Coordinate with engineers for design clarifications.
- Ensure accuracy of dimensions, annotations, and technical details.
