Job Description: Planning Engineer
Job Summary
The Planning Engineer is responsible for developing, monitoring, and controlling project schedules to ensure projects are completed on time and within budget. The role involves preparing project plans, tracking progress, coordinating with project teams, identifying schedule risks, and providing timely reports to support effective project execution.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop detailed project schedules, work breakdown structures (WBS), and project execution plans.
- Prepare baseline schedules and update project timelines throughout the project lifecycle.
- Monitor project progress and compare actual performance against planned schedules.
- Identify schedule delays, risks, and critical path activities, and recommend corrective actions.
- Coordinate with project managers, site engineers, procurement, and other departments to ensure timely project execution.
- Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly progress reports for management and clients.
- Conduct resource planning and monitor manpower, equipment, and material utilization.
- Analyze project performance using scheduling techniques such as Critical Path Method (CPM) and Earned Value Management (EVM).
- Assist in cost control, forecasting, and project budgeting activities.
- Prepare recovery plans for delayed projects and monitor their implementation.
- Maintain project documentation, schedules, and planning records.
- Participate in project meetings and provide planning and scheduling support.
- Ensure compliance with company procedures, project specifications, and contractual requirements.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Construction Management, or a related engineering discipline.
- Professional certification in Project Management or Planning (e.g., PMP or Primavera certification) is an advantage.
Required Skills
- Strong knowledge of project planning and scheduling principles.
- Proficiency in scheduling software such as Primavera P6, Microsoft Project, or equivalent.
- Good understanding of construction or engineering project management.
- Knowledge of Critical Path Method (CPM), resource loading, and project controls.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and coordination abilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings and project specifications.
- Time management and organizational skills.
- Attention to detail and ability to work under pressure.
Preferred Experience
- 3–7 years of experience as a Planning Engineer or in a project planning role.
- Experience in construction, infrastructure, oil & gas, manufacturing, or industrial projects is preferred.
- Familiarity with project cost control and progress measurement techniques is an advantage.
Work Environment
- Office-based with regular visits to construction or project sites.
- Frequent interaction with project managers, engineers, contractors, and clients.
- May require travel and extended working hours to meet project deadlines.
