Cost Accountant — Job Description
Job Summary
The Cost Accountant is responsible for monitoring, analyzing, and controlling the organization's costs. The role involves cost accounting, inventory management, variance analysis, budgeting support, financial reporting, and identifying opportunities to improve cost efficiency and profitability.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain accurate records of product, material, labor, and operating costs.
- Prepare and analyze cost reports, cost statements, and management reports.
- Monitor actual costs against budgets, standards, and forecasts.
- Conduct regular cost and variance analysis and investigate significant deviations.
- Maintain accurate inventory records and conduct periodic physical stock verification.
- Monitor material consumption, wastage, spoilage, and stock variances.
- Review purchase prices, supplier invoices, and material costs for accuracy.
- Calculate and maintain standard costs, recipe costs, product costs, and service costs as applicable.
- Assist in preparation and monitoring of annual budgets and operating forecasts.
- Analyze departmental expenses and identify areas of cost leakage or inefficiency.
- Reconcile inventory, purchase, consumption, and accounting records.
- Prepare monthly cost and profitability reports for management.
- Monitor food and beverage costs in hotels/restaurants, where applicable.
- Review recipe costing, portion sizes, selling prices, and menu profitability where required.
- Monitor cost percentages and investigate unusual movements in food, beverage, material, and operating costs.
- Coordinate with Purchasing, Stores, Production, Operations, and Finance departments to ensure accurate cost information.
- Ensure proper documentation and authorization for purchases, stock movements, wastage, transfers, and adjustments.
- Assist with month-end and year-end closing activities.
- Support internal and external audits by providing relevant cost and inventory documentation.
- Ensure compliance with company accounting policies, internal controls, and applicable accounting standards.
- Identify opportunities for cost reduction, process improvement, and operational efficiency.
- Maintain confidentiality of financial and commercial information.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, or a related field.
- Professional qualification such as CMA, ACCA, CA, or equivalent is an advantage.
- Typically 2–5 years of relevant experience in cost accounting, financial accounting, inventory control, or management accounting.
- Experience in hospitality, manufacturing, retail, or other cost-intensive industries is preferred depending on the organization.
Required Skills & Competencies
- Strong understanding of cost accounting and management accounting principles.
- Knowledge of budgeting, forecasting, inventory control, and variance analysis.
- Strong numerical and analytical skills.
- Good knowledge of accounting principles and financial reporting.
- Advanced Excel skills, including formulas, PivotTables, and data analysis.
- Experience with ERP/accounting software is preferred.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to identify cost variances and investigate their root causes.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Ability to work with confidential financial information.
- Ability to meet reporting deadlines and work effectively under pressure.
