Second Engineer (Engine Department)
Rank & Department: Third in command of the engine room, after the Chief Engineer and First Engineer/Chief Engineer. Part of the Engine Department.
Direct Reports To: Chief Engineer (primarily), First Engineer.
Direct Supervision Of: Third & Fourth Engineers, Motormen, Oiler, Fitter, Cadets on watch.
Primary Function: The Senior Watchkeeping Engineer and Maintenance Officer. Responsible for the safe operation of the ship's machinery while on watch and for planning and executing major maintenance tasks.
Key Responsibilities:
- Watchkeeping: Stands an engineering watch (typically 4-8 AM/PM). Supervises the watchkeeping team, ensures safe operation of the main engine, generators, boilers, and all auxiliary systems. Records parameters in the engine logbook.
- Maintenance: In charge of planned maintenance systems (PMS). Oversees and performs major maintenance, overhauls, and repairs on key machinery such as pumps, compressors, purifiers, and fuel injection systems.
- Spare Parts & Inventory: Manages the engine room spare parts inventory, requisitions, and stores. Ensures critical spares are available.
- Safety & Compliance: Ensures all engine room operations comply with safety and environmental regulations (MARPOL). Manages the engine side of the Safety Management System (SMS).
- Technical Troubleshooting: Leads troubleshooting efforts for complex mechanical and electrical faults. Acts as the chief technical expert on watch.
Required Certifications: Second Engineer Officer (Unlimited) license, STCW certificates for advanced firefighting, proficiency in high-voltage systems (if applicable), and often specialized training for the specific type of machinery (e.g., ME Engine, refrigerants).
