Position Overview:
The Electrical Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing electrical equipment, control systems, and power distribution networks within industrial, commercial, or facility settings. This role focuses on ensuring the reliability and safety of electrical systems that power machinery, lighting, and building operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Install, wire, calibrate, and troubleshoot industrial electrical components, including motors, motor controls (VFDs, soft starters), PLC I/O panels, sensors, switches, and circuit breakers.
- Read and interpret electrical blueprints, schematics, ladder diagrams, and PLC wiring diagrams to diagnose and repair complex systems.
- Perform preventative maintenance (PM) tasks on electrical distribution systems, industrial machinery, and control panels, including thermal imaging, connection tightening, and insulation testing.
- Diagnose and repair electrical malfunctions using multimeters, megohmmeters, oscilloscopes, and other diagnostic equipment.
- Adhere rigorously to the National Electrical Code (NEC), OSHA standards, and site-specific safety procedures, especially Lockout-Tagout (LOTO) and arc flash safety protocols.
- Assist in the commissioning of new equipment and modifications to existing electrical systems.
- Collaborate with engineers, operators, and other technicians to identify root causes of electrical failures and implement corrective actions.
- Maintain accurate records of work performed, parts used, and equipment conditions in a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
- May involve programming or troubleshooting basic PLC logic and HMI interfaces, though this is often a shared responsibility with controls technicians.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Associate’s degree in Electrical Technology, Industrial Maintenance, or a related field, or completion of a recognized electrical apprenticeship program.
- Proven experience (3+ years) as an Electrical Technician in an industrial or commercial environment.
- Strong knowledge of AC/DC theory, industrial power distribution, and control circuit troubleshooting.
- Familiarity with industrial networking (Ethernet/IP, DeviceNet, etc.) and PLC hardware is highly beneficial.
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and respond to urgent breakdowns.
- A state or local Electrical Journeyman license is often required or preferred.
- NFPA 70E (Arc Flash) training and certification.
