Contract Engineer
Job Summary:
The Contract Engineer is a technical-commercial role focused on the active management and execution of contracts. This professional ensures that the company's interests are protected, risks are managed, and all work is carried out in accordance with contractual terms. They bridge the gap between the project's technical delivery and its commercial/legal framework.
Key Responsibilities:
- Contract Management: Administer and manage the main contract and subcontracts from award to close-out, ensuring all parties fulfill their obligations.
- Risk Management: Identify, assess, and mitigate contractual and commercial risks. Advise project teams on risk exposure.
- Change & Claim Management: Lead the identification, quantification, negotiation, and settlement of Variation Orders (VOs) and contractual claims (both from clients and to/from subcontractors).
- Contractual Advice: Provide guidance to Project Managers and site teams on the interpretation of contract clauses (FIDIC, bespoke contracts, etc.).
- Dispute Avoidance: Work to resolve conflicts and disputes at the earliest stage through negotiation and formal correspondence.
- Procurement Support: Assist in the preparation of subcontract packages and ensure back-to-back terms are achieved.
- Reporting: Prepare detailed commercial reports for management, including exposure reports, forecasted final cost, and claim status updates.
- Close-Out: Ensure projects are closed out contractually, including the settlement of final accounts, release of securities, and obtaining of completion certificates.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, or a related field.
- Experience: 3-6 years of experience in contract administration/engineering, preferably with a main contractor in the construction or interiors sector.
- Skills:
- In-depth knowledge of standard construction contracts (e.g., FIDIC) and contract law principles.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent negotiation and persuasive communication skills.
- Ability to read and understand technical drawings and project schedules.
- Proficient in MS Office and contract management software.
- Commercially astute with a focus on protecting company interests.
