Civil Estimator | Job Description
A Civil Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate cost estimates for construction and civil engineering projects, including materials, labour, equipment, and subcontractor costs. The role is critical in tendering and bidding for projects such as buildings, infrastructure, and industrial works.
Key Responsibilities
- Analyze tender documents, drawings, specifications, and BOQs.
- Prepare detailed cost estimates for civil construction projects.
- Calculate quantities of materials such as concrete, steel reinforcement, formwork, and finishes.
- Obtain and evaluate quotations from suppliers and subcontractors.
- Prepare tender submissions and pricing proposals.
- Compare project costs against budgets and identify cost-saving opportunities.
- Coordinate with engineering, procurement, and project teams for accurate pricing.
- Prepare rate analysis for labour, materials, and equipment.
- Maintain a database of current market rates and historical project costs.
- Assist in preparing variation orders and cost claims during project execution.
Required Skills
- Strong knowledge of civil construction methods and materials.
- Ability to read and interpret architectural, structural, and MEP drawings.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD (for quantity take-off) and MS Excel (advanced level).
- Knowledge of BOQ preparation and rate analysis techniques.
- Strong numerical, analytical, and negotiation skills.
- Understanding of construction contracts (advantage).

- Usually 3–7 years of experience in:
