Job Summary
The Planning Engineer is responsible for developing, monitoring, and controlling project schedules to ensure timely completion of projects within budget and quality standards. The role involves project planning, resource allocation, progress tracking, risk assessment, and coordination with project teams to achieve project objectives efficiently.
Key Responsibilities
Project Planning & Scheduling
- Develop detailed project schedules, work breakdown structures (WBS), and project timelines.
- Prepare baseline schedules using project planning software.
- Define project milestones, critical paths, and activity sequences.
- Coordinate with project managers and stakeholders to establish project objectives and deliverables.
Progress Monitoring & Control
- Monitor project progress against approved schedules.
- Track actual performance and identify schedule variances.
- Prepare weekly and monthly progress reports.
- Update project schedules based on site progress and changing project requirements.
Resource Planning
- Plan and allocate manpower, equipment, and materials effectively.
- Coordinate with procurement, engineering, and construction teams to ensure resource availability.
- Analyze resource utilization and recommend improvements.
Cost & Performance Analysis
- Support project cost control and budget monitoring activities.
- Perform schedule impact analysis and productivity assessments.
- Assist in earned value management (EVM) and project performance measurement.
- Identify delays and propose recovery plans.
Risk Management
- Identify potential scheduling risks and project constraints.
- Conduct delay analysis and develop mitigation strategies.
- Evaluate the impact of scope changes on project schedules.
- Support claims preparation and extension-of-time (EOT) analysis when required.
Reporting & Documentation
- Prepare project dashboards, look-ahead schedules, and management reports.
- Maintain planning records, schedules, and project documentation.
- Present schedule updates and project status reports to management and clients.
- Ensure compliance with project planning procedures and standards.
Coordination & Communication
- Liaise with project managers, engineers, contractors, consultants, and clients.
- Participate in project meetings and planning reviews.
- Coordinate activities among multiple project disciplines to ensure schedule alignment.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
- 3–7 years of experience in project planning and scheduling, preferably in construction, infrastructure, oil & gas, manufacturing, or engineering projects.
- Experience with project scheduling methodologies and project control practices.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in Primavera P6, Microsoft Project, or equivalent scheduling software.
- Knowledge of project management principles and scheduling techniques.
- Understanding of critical path method (CPM) and earned value management (EVM).
- Strong skills in Microsoft Excel and reporting tools.
- Familiarity with project cost control and risk management processes.
