A Steel Fixer (also called a Rebar Worker or Rod Buster) is responsible for cutting, bending, assembling, and installing reinforcing steel bars (rebar) and steel mesh used to strengthen concrete structures.
Job Description – Steel Fixer
Key Responsibilities
- Read and interpret reinforcement drawings and bar bending schedules (BBS).
- Cut, bend, and shape steel reinforcement bars according to specifications.
- Install and tie rebar and steel mesh for foundations, columns, beams, slabs, walls, and other concrete structures.
- Position reinforcement accurately using spacers and chairs to maintain the required concrete cover.
- Secure reinforcement using tie wire and hand tools.
- Check that reinforcement is correctly aligned before concrete is poured.
- Coordinate with carpenters, concrete workers, and site supervisors.
- Follow safety procedures and keep the work area organized.
Requirements
- High school education or vocational training (preferred).
- Typically 2–5 years of experience as a Steel Fixer.
- Ability to read reinforcement drawings and bar bending schedules.
- Knowledge of reinforcement installation methods and construction standards.
- Physical fitness and ability to lift and handle steel bars.
