Long Job Description:
The Chief Engineer is the head of the Technical/Engine Department and is responsible for the entire vessel's engineering systems and machinery. This senior officer ensures the safe, efficient, and economical operation of all mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and electronic equipment on board, including the main propulsion plant, auxiliary engines, boilers, steering gear, and cargo handling systems (on some vessels). The Chief Engineer manages the engine department budget, spare parts inventory, and fuel/lubricant consumption. They are responsible for ensuring all machinery complies with international regulations (SOLAS, MARPOL, Class) and for implementing the company's Safety Management System (SMS) within the department. They plan and oversee maintenance, repairs, and surveys, and authorize critical work permits. In emergencies, the Chief Engineer acts as Damage Control Team leader and is a key member of the vessel's command team, advising the Captain on all technical matters.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assume full responsibility for the operational condition of all machinery and equipment.
- Manage the Engine Department personnel, including work schedules, training, and welfare.
- Control the department's budget, requisition spare parts, fuel, and lubricants.
- Ensure strict adherence to pollution prevention regulations (MARPOL).
- Plan, supervise, and certify maintenance according to the Planned Maintenance System (PMS).
- Authorize work permits (Hot Work, Cold Work, Entry into Enclosed Spaces) for engineering tasks.
- Maintain official engine room logs, records, and certificates.
- Serve as a key member of the vessel's emergency response team.
