Oiler (Engine Department)
Rank & Department: A rating (non-officer) within the Engine Department. An entry-level or semi-skilled position in the engine room.
Direct Reports To: All engineering officers (Second, Third, Fourth Engineer), especially the Engineer Officer of the Watch (EOOW). Ultimately reports to the Chief Engineer.
Direct Supervision Of: Typically none. May guide Engine Cadets or Wiper/Trainees.
Primary Function: To assist the engineering officers and motormen with the operation, maintenance, and cleanliness of engine room machinery.
Key Responsibilities:
- Watchkeeping (if on watch): Assists the Engineer Officer of the Watch with routine rounds, taking readings (temperatures, pressures, levels), and basic operational tasks like changing over filters or pumps.
- Maintenance Support: Provides hands-on assistance to engineers during repairs and overhauls. Tasks include fetching tools, dismantling/assembling components under supervision, and cleaning parts.
- Lubrication (Core Duty): Performs daily greasing and oiling of moving machinery (bearings, linkages, etc.) as per the lubrication schedule. Monitors oil levels in sumps and reservoirs.
- Cleaning & Housekeeping: Maintains a clean and safe engine room. Cleans bilges, wipes down machinery, mops floors, and ensures tools and work areas are tidy. Manages oil rags and waste.
- Bunker Operations: Assists during fuel (bunkering) operations, often handling lines and connections under supervision.
Required Certifications: STCW Basic Safety Training (firefighting, personal survival, etc.), sometimes an Efficient Deck Hand (EDH) or similar rating certificate. Experience and on-the-job training are key.
