Job Summary
The Mechanical Superintendent is responsible for planning, coordinating, and supervising all mechanical construction, installation, maintenance, testing, and commissioning activities. This role ensures that mechanical works are executed safely, efficiently, on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with engineering specifications, quality standards, and regulatory requirements. The Mechanical Superintendent leads site teams and coordinates with multiple disciplines to achieve successful project delivery.
Key Responsibilities
Project Planning & Execution
- Plan, organize, and oversee all mechanical construction and maintenance activities.
- Review engineering drawings, specifications, procedures, and project schedules.
- Develop manpower, equipment, and material plans to support project execution.
- Monitor project progress and ensure timely completion of mechanical works.
- Coordinate with engineering, procurement, QA/QC, HSE, and other project departments.
Supervision & Team Management
- Lead and supervise mechanical supervisors, foremen, technicians, welders, fitters, riggers, and subcontractors.
- Assign daily work activities and monitor workforce productivity.
- Conduct toolbox talks, safety meetings, and workforce briefings.
- Provide technical guidance, coaching, and performance management.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and project requirements.
Mechanical Construction & Installation
- Supervise installation, alignment, testing, and commissioning of mechanical equipment and systems.
- Oversee installation of pumps, compressors, turbines, heat exchangers, pressure vessels, storage tanks, piping systems, HVAC equipment, and rotating machinery.
- Ensure mechanical work is performed according to approved drawings, specifications, and industry standards.
- Coordinate mechanical interfaces with civil, structural, electrical, and instrumentation teams.
Maintenance & Reliability
- Support preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance activities.
- Monitor equipment performance and identify opportunities for reliability improvements.
- Troubleshoot mechanical issues and implement corrective actions.
- Ensure proper maintenance documentation and reporting.
Quality Assurance & Control
- Ensure compliance with project specifications, codes, standards, and quality requirements.
- Coordinate inspections and testing activities with QA/QC personnel.
- Review inspection reports, punch lists, and non-conformance reports.
- Implement corrective actions and ensure closure of quality issues.
Health, Safety & Environment (HSE)
- Enforce workplace safety regulations and company HSE policies.
- Ensure safe work practices, permit-to-work compliance, and risk assessments.
- Conduct safety inspections and hazard identification activities.
- Investigate incidents and implement corrective and preventive measures.
- Promote a strong safety culture across all mechanical activities.
Materials & Resource Management
- Monitor material availability and coordinate procurement requirements.
- Ensure proper storage, handling, and utilization of mechanical materials and equipment.
- Manage tools, equipment, and construction resources efficiently.
- Control material consumption and minimize waste.
Reporting & Stakeholder Coordination
- Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly progress reports.
- Participate in project meetings and provide updates on mechanical activities.
- Coordinate with clients, consultants, vendors, and subcontractors.
- Resolve technical and operational issues affecting project progress.
Cost & Schedule Control
- Monitor labor productivity and project costs.
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and cost-control initiatives.
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce operational expenses.
- Support project closeout, handover, and documentation activities.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical discipline.
- Relevant trade certifications or professional qualifications are advantageous.
- Minimum 8–15 years of experience in mechanical construction, maintenance, or industrial projects, including supervisory experience.
Required Skills & Competencies
- Strong knowledge of mechanical equipment, piping systems, rotating equipment, and industrial construction practices.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, P&IDs, isometrics, and technical specifications.
- Knowledge of industry standards such as ASME, API, ASTM, ANSI, and ISO.
- Excellent leadership, team management, and supervisory skills.
- Strong planning, scheduling, and project coordination abilities.
- Effective problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Good communication and stakeholder management capabilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and project management software.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in oil & gas, petrochemical, power generation, mining, marine, manufacturing, or heavy industrial projects.
- Certifications in project management, quality control, welding inspection, or HSE (PMP, OSHA, NEBOSH, etc.).
- Experience with commissioning, startup, and shutdown projects.
