Job Summary
A Metallurgical Engineer is responsible for studying, developing, testing, and improving metals and alloys used in industrial applications. The role focuses on material selection, heat treatment, failure analysis, corrosion control, and ensuring the mechanical performance and reliability of materials used in manufacturing, construction, oil & gas, aerospace, automotive, and heavy industries.
Key Responsibilities
Material Selection & Engineering
- Select appropriate metals and alloys based on mechanical, thermal, and chemical requirements.
- Evaluate material properties such as strength, hardness, toughness, ductility, and fatigue resistance.
- Recommend materials for specific applications in engineering and manufacturing projects.
- Support design teams with material engineering input.
Testing & Analysis
- Conduct mechanical testing such as tensile, hardness, impact, and fatigue tests.
- Perform microstructure analysis using microscopes and laboratory equipment.
- Analyze chemical composition of metals using spectrometry and related techniques.
- Interpret test results and prepare technical reports.
Failure Analysis
- Investigate material failures such as cracking, corrosion, wear, and deformation.
- Identify root causes of failures in industrial components and structures.
- Recommend corrective and preventive actions to improve material performance.
- Support reliability and safety improvement programs.
Heat Treatment & Processing
- Develop and monitor heat treatment processes such as annealing, quenching, and tempering.
- Improve mechanical properties of materials through controlled processing techniques.
- Ensure consistency and quality in metallurgical processes.
Corrosion Control & Protection
- Study corrosion mechanisms and recommend protective measures.
- Develop coatings, surface treatments, and corrosion prevention strategies.
- Support asset integrity management programs.
Quality Assurance & Compliance
- Ensure materials comply with industry standards and specifications.
- Conduct inspections and audits of raw materials and finished products.
- Work closely with QA/QC teams to maintain quality standards.
- Support certification and regulatory compliance requirements.
Research & Development
- Develop new alloys and improved material compositions.
- Support innovation in manufacturing and product development.
- Collaborate with R&D teams to enhance material performance.
Documentation & Reporting
- Prepare technical reports, test results, and failure analysis documentation.
- Maintain material records, inspection reports, and laboratory data.
- Present findings to engineering and management teams.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, or Mechanical Engineering (with metallurgy specialization).
- 3–10+ years of experience in metallurgy, materials testing, or industrial manufacturing.
- Experience in industries such as oil & gas, steel production, automotive, aerospace, or heavy manufacturing is preferred.
