Job Summary
A Process Engineer is responsible for designing, optimizing, and improving industrial processes to ensure efficient, safe, and cost-effective production. The role focuses on developing process flow diagrams, optimizing plant performance, troubleshooting operational issues, and ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards in industries such as oil & gas, petrochemicals, chemical plants, power generation, pharmaceuticals, and manufacturing.
Key Responsibilities
Process Design & Development
- Develop and review Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) and Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).
- Perform process calculations including mass balance, energy balance, and material flow.
- Design and optimize unit operations such as distillation, heat exchange, mixing, and separation.
- Define process parameters for equipment sizing and selection.
Process Optimization
- Analyze plant performance and identify areas for efficiency improvement.
- Optimize production processes to reduce cost, energy consumption, and waste.
- Implement process improvement initiatives and debottlenecking studies.
- Support continuous improvement (Lean, Six Sigma) initiatives.
Operations Support & Troubleshooting
- Provide technical support to plant operations teams.
- Diagnose and resolve process-related issues and upsets.
- Monitor key process parameters and ensure stable operations.
- Recommend corrective actions for process deviations.
Project Engineering Support
- Coordinate with mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, and civil teams.
- Support equipment selection and specification development.
- Review vendor documents and technical proposals.
- Participate in plant commissioning and startup activities.
Safety, Quality & Compliance
- Conduct process hazard analysis (PHA) and support HAZOP studies.
- Ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations.
- Implement process safety management (PSM) practices.
- Ensure product quality and process reliability standards.
Simulation & Modeling
- Use process simulation tools to model and optimize operations.
- Evaluate design alternatives using simulation results.
- Validate process performance under different operating conditions.
Documentation & Reporting
- Prepare technical reports, process documentation, and operating procedures.
- Maintain process data, performance logs, and reports.
- Document process changes and improvement initiatives.
- Provide regular performance updates to management.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, or related discipline.
- 3–10+ years of experience in process design, plant operations, or engineering roles.
- Experience in oil & gas, petrochemical, chemical, power, or manufacturing industries preferred.
