Detailed Job Description:
A Steel Fitter (or Structural Steel Fitter) is a specialized tradesperson who assembles, positions, aligns, and fits fabricated steel components to create structural frameworks for buildings, bridges, and other industrial projects. This work is foundational to the structural integrity of large-scale constructions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Read and interpret detailed engineering drawings and blueprints to understand the structure's design.
- Lay out, position, align, and fit together fabricated steel parts such as beams, girders, columns, and trusses.
- Use precision measuring tools, levels, and plumb bobs to ensure components are aligned correctly before they are permanently bolted or welded.
- Signal crane operators to lift and position heavy steel members.
- Make minor adjustments using hand tools, torches, and grinders to achieve perfect fits.
- Bolt or temporarily weld components in place for final assembly by certified welders.
- Rig and signal loads safely, adhering to all crane and worksite safety protocols.
- Conduct checks to ensure all work meets specified tolerances and quality standards.
Requirements:
- Proven experience as a steel fitter or ironworker.
- Ability to read complex structural and architectural drawings.
- Knowledge of steel erection techniques, rigging, and signaling.
- Excellent spatial awareness and measurement skills.
- Physical strength, balance, and comfort working at great heights.
- Relevant safety certifications (e.g., OSHA, or local equivalent) are often required.
