Position Summary
The Head of Department (English) provides academic leadership and strategic direction for the English Department, ensuring excellence in teaching, learning, curriculum delivery, and student achievement. The role involves leading and mentoring English teachers, overseeing curriculum development, monitoring academic performance, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement aligned with the school's vision and educational standards.
Key Responsibilities
Academic Leadership
- Lead and manage the English Department to achieve high standards of teaching and learning.
- Develop and implement departmental goals, action plans, and improvement strategies.
- Promote innovative and effective instructional practices across all grade levels.
- Ensure consistency and quality in curriculum delivery and assessment practices.
- Support the school's academic vision, mission, and strategic objectives.
Curriculum Management
- Oversee the planning, implementation, and review of the English curriculum.
- Ensure alignment with national, international, or school-specific curriculum frameworks.
- Monitor curriculum coverage and learning outcomes across all classes.
- Lead the development of schemes of work, lesson plans, and instructional resources.
- Ensure effective integration of literacy skills across the curriculum.
Staff Supervision & Development
- Supervise, mentor, and evaluate English teachers.
- Conduct classroom observations and provide constructive feedback.
- Identify professional development needs and coordinate training opportunities.
- Support teacher performance management and appraisal processes.
- Foster collaboration, teamwork, and the sharing of best practices within the department.
Student Achievement & Assessment
- Monitor student progress and academic performance in English.
- Analyze assessment data and implement strategies to improve learning outcomes.
- Ensure effective preparation for internal and external examinations.
- Develop intervention plans for students requiring academic support.
- Promote excellence in literacy, communication, and critical thinking skills.
Quality Assurance
- Ensure compliance with school policies, accreditation standards, and educational regulations.
- Maintain high standards of teaching, assessment, and departmental documentation.
- Prepare departmental reports, improvement plans, and academic reviews.
- Participate in school inspections, accreditation visits, and quality assurance processes.
Communication & Stakeholder Engagement
- Act as the primary point of contact for English-related academic matters.
- Communicate effectively with school leadership, teachers, students, and parents.
- Lead departmental meetings and contribute to whole-school academic initiatives.
- Support parent-teacher meetings and academic consultations.
Enrichment & Extracurricular Activities
- Promote reading, writing, public speaking, and literary enrichment programs.
- Organize literary events, debates, writing competitions, book fairs, and language activities.
- Encourage student participation in academic and cultural events related to English.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Manage departmental budgets, resources, and instructional materials.
- Coordinate teacher schedules and workload allocation within the department.
- Maintain accurate records, reports, and departmental documentation.
- Ensure effective use of educational technology and learning resources.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in English, English Literature, Linguistics, Education, or a related field.
- Master's Degree in English, Education, Curriculum & Instruction, or a related field preferred.
- Recognized teaching qualification or teaching license/certification.
Experience
- Minimum 5–8 years of successful teaching experience in English.
- At least 2–3 years of leadership experience as a Department Coordinator, Lead Teacher, or Head of Department preferred.
- Experience with international curricula (IB, British, American, CBSE, or equivalent) is an advantage.
